AquaScat 2 HT | High-Turbidity Meter for Raw Water

The AquaScat measures turbidity of potable, recycled and  raw water according to IEC 27027 using 90° scattered light detection in a non-contact, free-falling water stream. This contactless design eliminates window fouling and eliminates the need for regular maintenance, reducing downtime and labour costs.

Calibration is performed either automatically (AquaScat WTM A version) or manually (AquaScat WTM / HT) with a calibration checking unit specific to that instrument.

With a range of 0-4,000NTU, the AquaScat WTM is sensitive enough to be used for post-filtration potable water to a heavy rain event raw water. There are 8 pre-set 4-20mA measuring ranges in the AquaScat WTM, but any of these can be easily modified to suit your specific purpose (see the AquaScat video on setting your own measuring range).

Description

AquaScat 2 HT On-Line Turbidity Meter

The Sigrist AquaScat 2 HT is a robust on-line turbidity meter engineered for continuous monitoring of higher-turbidity water in drinking water, wastewater, and industrial process applications. Built around the 90° scattered light measuring principle in accordance with ISO 7027 / EN 27027, the AquaScat 2 HT uses a unique non-contact free-fall measurement design that keeps the optics clean even under challenging raw water conditions.

Furthermore, the AquaScat 2 HT is specifically optimised for turbidity values above 10 FNU, making it ideal for raw water intake, sedimentation monitoring, and filtration performance verification. As a result, it complements the AquaScat 2 WTM (which targets ultra-low turbidity polishing) to provide complete coverage across the water treatment process.

Applications

Across the water treatment industry, the AquaScat 2 HT supports a wide range of higher-turbidity monitoring tasks, including:

  • Turbidity measurement in untreated raw water
  • Turbidity monitoring in the sedimentation stage
  • Turbidity measurement before and after the filtration stage
  • Process water monitoring in industrial facilities
  • Wastewater treatment monitoring at key process control points

As a result, the AquaScat 2 HT has become a trusted choice for water utilities, treatment plant operators, and process engineers managing pre-filtration and raw water quality control.

Non-Contact Free-Fall Measurement

Unlike traditional turbidity meters, the AquaScat 2 HT measures turbidity in a free-falling water jet. Because the water never touches the optical unit, the measuring windows stay clean even at high turbidity levels, where conventional sensors typically suffer from fouling and drift.

In addition, this contactless design delivers several practical benefits:

  • No window cleaning required, even under heavy turbidity loads
  • Minimal maintenance thanks to non-contact measurement
  • Precise results across the entire turbidity measuring range
  • No drift caused by contamination on the optics
  • Continuous, reliable performance with reduced service intervals

Consequently, water treatment operators benefit from accurate readings without the manual cleaning and frequent maintenance associated with conventional inline turbidity sensors.

Optimised for Higher Turbidities

Engineered for raw water and pre-filtration monitoring, the AquaScat 2 HT is specifically optimised for turbidity values above 10 FNU. Therefore, it is the ideal choice for measurement points where conventional low-range sensors would saturate or require frequent recalibration.

Key application areas include:

  • Raw water intake from rivers, dams, or bores
  • Sedimentation tank and clarifier performance monitoring
  • Pre-filtration turbidity verification
  • Sand and media filter inlet and outlet monitoring
  • Industrial process water with variable solids loading

In addition, the AquaScat 2 HT pairs well with the AquaScat 2 WTM in multi-stage treatment plants — providing HT-grade ruggedness at the front of the process and WTM-grade sensitivity at the polishing stage.

Simple Verification with a Solid Reference

The AquaScat 2 HT is factory calibrated with formazin. For ongoing recalibration during operation, however, a secondary turbidity standard (solid reference) is used instead. Consequently, operators can perform precise recalibration without handling toxic formazin solutions.

In addition, the solid reference offers several practical advantages:

  • Stable optical properties that do not change over time
  • Solids reference values are pre-loaded onto the device at the factory
  • Reduced time spent on routine calibration checks
  • Safer working environment with no toxic chemicals on site
  • Repeatable, comparable verification results across service intervals

Integrated Touchscreen Operating Unit

To make daily operation straightforward, the AquaScat 2 HT features a 3.5″ colour touchscreen display. In addition, the integrated control unit provides:

  • On-screen display of measurement values, status, and alarm messages
  • Graphical trend visualisation directly on the device
  • Internal data memory for the last 32 days of measurement data
  • Intuitive menu navigation via touchscreen

Consequently, operators can review recent trends, troubleshoot issues, and verify performance without connecting an external laptop or control room interface.

Flexible System Integration

To suit any process control architecture, the AquaScat 2 HT offers a wide range of integration options:

  • Analogue outputs: 2 × 0/4–20 mA, galvanically isolated
  • Relay outputs: 2 × 250 VAC, 4 A
  • Digital interfaces: Ethernet, Modbus TCP, SD card as standard
  • Optional fieldbus: Profibus DP, Profinet IO, Modbus RTU
  • Additional inputs: flow meter, 2 × 0/4–20 mA

Furthermore, the AquaScat 2 HT integrates seamlessly into existing SCADA, PLC, and DCS systems, which makes it straightforward to retrofit into legacy water treatment plants or commission as part of new builds.
