AquaScat S | In-Line Turbidity Sensor

In-line turbidity measurement for water treatment

The AquaScat measures the turbidity of potable water according to IEC 27027 and the temperature, with the measurement carried out directly in the water. This reduces maintenance work to a minimum and has zero water loss. There is also a retractable option which allows the AquaScat S to be withdrawn for CIP and maintenance.

Calibration is done with a checking unit that has no consumables which enable the operator to return the instrument calibration to factory calibration, increasing operational efficiency whilst maintaining flexibility non real world applications.

Description

AquaScat S In-Line Turbidity Sensor

The Sigrist AquaScat S is a high-precision in-line turbidity sensor engineered for continuous monitoring of water quality across drinking water, beverage, food, and industrial process applications. Built around the 90° scattered light measuring principle in accordance with ISO 7027 / EN 27027, the AquaScat S delivers exceptional accuracy with minimal maintenance.

Furthermore, the AquaScat S is one of the most adaptable in-line turbidity sensors on the market, with various installation options, low drift, and flexible integration into modern process control systems.

Applications

Across the water and beverage industries, the AquaScat S supports a wide range of monitoring tasks, including:

  • Monitoring of UV disinfection systems
  • Monitoring of ultrafiltration systems
  • Turbidity measurement in treated drinking water
  • Monitoring of reservoirs and water distribution networks
  • Turbidity in process water and beverage production

As a result, the AquaScat S has become a trusted choice for water utilities, beverage producers, and food manufacturers requiring reliable, low-maintenance turbidity measurement.

Outstanding Measurement Accuracy and Stability

Built for precision applications, the AquaScat S delivers measurement accuracy of ±1 % or ±0.007 FNU. Therefore, it is ideal for filtration monitoring and stringent water quality control.

In addition, the sensor uses a light trap absorber to minimise stray light effects, which makes precise measurements down to a few mFNU possible. Thanks to very low drift, measurement values remain accurate and comparable, even after months of continuous operation.

Minimal Maintenance, Maximum Availability

Unlike traditional turbidity sensors, the AquaScat S is designed for genuinely low-maintenance operation. For example:

  • The slanted, self-cleaning sensor head uses flow dynamics to automatically clean the optical surface, with no mechanical wiper required
  • A factory 7-point calibration is performed across the entire 0–4,000 FNU measuring range
  • A secondary turbidity standard (solids reference) is available for recalibration during operation
  • No toxic formazine is required for recalibration

As a result, operators benefit from reduced downtime, lower service costs, and safer working conditions.

Robust Design for Demanding Environments

Engineered for outdoor and harsh industrial use, the AquaScat S features a stainless steel (1.4571 / 316Ti) body with PPSU and sapphire glass components. Consequently, it offers excellent corrosion resistance and long service life in demanding environments.

In addition, the sensor has no moving parts, which improves reliability and reduces wear. Two protection class options are available:

  • IP67 – for the standard sensor with M12 8-pin connector
  • IP68 – for the immersion version with fixed cable

Display in total suspended solids (TSS) is also available, providing extra flexibility for operators monitoring sediment or filtration performance.

Flexible System Integration

To suit any process control architecture, the AquaScat S offers multiple integration options:

  • Direct connection via analogue or digital output, with no control unit required
  • Sicon or Sicon M control unit for data visualisation and simple sensor parameterisation
  • Conn-R connection box for basic sensor operation

Furthermore, additional fieldbus protocols are available, including Modbus TCP, Modbus RTU, Profibus DP, and Profinet IO. This makes integration into SCADA and PLC systems straightforward, regardless of the existing automation platform.

Flexible Process Connections

Because every installation is different, the AquaScat S supports a range of process connection options:

  • Steel pipe with welded flange (DN40, DN50, DN80)
  • Fitting for PE or PVC pipes
  • PVC bypass measuring cell
  • Exchangeable fitting
  • Direct tank immersion (submersible version)

Consequently, the AquaScat S can be installed in almost any configuration, from clean drinking water mains to open process tanks.

Certifications and Conformities

Sigrist designed the AquaScat S to meet the demanding requirements of drinking water and food contact applications. As a result, the sensor carries the following certifications:

  • ACS (Attestation Conformité Sanitaire)
  • DWI (Drinking Water Inspectorate)
  • DVGW / UBA Hygiene Conformity
  • SVGW certification
  • CE and UKCA conformity

These certifications give water utilities and food producers confidence that the AquaScat S meets internationally recognised hygiene and safety standards.
