Sintrol DumoPro Ambient Air Dust Monitor

Continuous Workplace Dust Monitor for Industrial Environments

The Sintrol DumoPro is a continuous ambient air dust monitor engineered for real-time, 24/7 monitoring of total suspended particles (TSP) in industrial workplaces. By drawing ambient air through an internal measurement chamber, the DumoPro provides early warning of dust events, supports worker protection, and helps mitigate the risk of dust explosions in even the most demanding industrial environments.

Furthermore, the DumoPro is also available as the DumoPro Ex variant, which adds full ATEX, IECEx, and North American HazLoc certification for use in dust hazardous areas (Zones 20, 21, and 22 in ambient air). As a result, the DumoPro suits both general workplace dust monitoring and classified hazardous areas across mining, grain handling, sugar, flour, timber, and powder processing facilities.

Ambient Air Monitoring vs In-Duct Monitoring

Unlike the duct-mounted Sintrol S201 and S203, which measure dust inside ducts and stacks, the DumoPro monitors the open ambient air of the workplace itself. Therefore, it is the right choice when the goal is protecting people, equipment, and housekeeping rather than monitoring a specific filtration system.

In practice, the two approaches are complementary:

  • In-duct monitors (S201 / S203) — detect filter leaks and trend filtration performance inside the process
  • Ambient air monitor (DumoPro) — detects fugitive dust, accumulation, and explosion risk in the surrounding work area

As a result, many facilities deploy both: in-duct units to protect the filtration process, and DumoPro units to protect the workplace.

How the Sintrol DumoPro Works

The Sintrol DumoPro is built around Inductive Electrification Technology, a refined evolution of traditional triboelectric sensing. An internal fan draws ambient air through the measurement chamber at a steady, constant flow. As particles pass nearby or contact the insulated stainless steel probe, they induce a small electrical charge that is proportional to the ambient dust concentration.

In contrast to classic triboelectric sensors that rely solely on the DC contact signal, Inductive Electrification uses both the DC and AC components of the signal. Consequently, the technology is:

  • Highly sensitive to total suspended particles
  • Tolerant to sensor contamination over time
  • Stable across temperature changes
  • Capable of a wide, linear measurement range
  • Reliable across a broad variety of dust types

Key Benefits for Workplace Dust Safety

Because airborne dust poses risks to worker health, equipment, and plant safety, the Sintrol DumoPro delivers wide-ranging benefits across industrial environments, including:

  • Early detection of dust events before they escalate
  • Continuous workplace and ambient air dust monitoring
  • Equipment and worker protection through real-time alarms
  • Support for good housekeeping practices
  • Reduced risk of dust explosions in classified areas
  • Product loss prevention by identifying fugitive emissions
  • Long-term, low-maintenance dust monitoring

As a result, plant operators gain continuous visibility into ambient dust levels — without manual sampling, sample handling, or guesswork.

Sintrol’s Unique Auto Setup Function

To simplify commissioning, the Sintrol DumoPro includes a unique Auto Setup function that automatically adapts the instrument to the actual ambient conditions. During the Auto Setup procedure, performed under normal operating conditions, the monitor establishes its measuring range, mA output scaling, and alarm thresholds without any manual configuration.

Furthermore, the alarm levels are set automatically based on the average measured dust level — typically 5 times and 20 times the reference dust level — and remain fully user-adjustable. In hazardous locations, Auto Setup can even be triggered without opening the instrument, which removes the need for hot work permits during commissioning.

Built-In Failsafe Features

In reference to multiple international safety codes, the DumoPro is engineered with comprehensive self-monitoring features for failsafe operation. Therefore, operators can trust that a fault will never be mistaken for a “clean air” reading.

Key failsafe features include:

  • Malfunction indication — relays relax, the mA output shows 22 mA, and LEDs blink
  • Fan speed monitoring, which triggers an error if the fan is blocked or slowed
  • Periodic automatic Zero and Span check and correction
  • Voltage supply tolerance of ±20 %
  • Detection of dirty or wet sensors that could distort the signal
  • On-board four-digit display for direct verification of dust levels or mA output

In addition, a simple functional test can be performed after installation: a properly grounded DumoPro shows no reaction when touched by hand, but reacts immediately when a piece of paper is torn in front of the inlet.

Hazardous Area Certification (DumoPro Ex)

For dust hazardous area applications, the Sintrol DumoPro Ex is certified under international and North American hazardous location standards. Therefore, it can be installed in classified Ex zones without requiring secondary protection systems.

Certifications include:

  • IECEx / ATEX: II 1 D Ex ia ta IIIC T200 93 °C Da Ta = −30 °C to +60 °C
  • US Hazardous Locations: Zone 20 AEx ia ta IIIC T93 °C Da Ta = −30 °C to +60 °C
  • Canadian Hazardous Locations: Ex ia ta IIIC T93 °C Da Ta = −30 °C to +60 °C
  • Korean KCs certification
  • IECEx, ATEX, MET, CE, and RoHS 3 compliant

In Australia and New Zealand, the IECEx scheme is the primary recognised certification under the AS/NZS 60079 series for hazardous area equipment.

DustTool Software and Sintrol Network

Every Sintrol DumoPro ships with access to the DustTool PC software, which provides a convenient platform for setup, parameter adjustment, and live measurement viewing. To connect, simply plug a USB cable directly into the monitor — DustTool automatically detects the interface and connects to the device.

Furthermore, multiple DumoPro units can be networked via RS-485, allowing operators to connect, track, manage, and control an entire network of dust monitors from a single interface. Once instruments are measuring as desired, DustLog 10 software can log the data and provide a plant-wide overview, with comprehensive real-time monitoring views, data storage, reporting, and off-site backup.

Communication and Integration

To integrate seamlessly with plant control systems, the DumoPro offers a comprehensive range of communication options:

  • Isolated active 4–20 mA output loop (up to 250 Ω, NAMUR NE43 compliant alarms)
  • Two configurable solid-state alarm outputs (100 mA at 24 V DC)
  • RS-485 serial communication with Modbus RTU protocol for control system integration
  • USB interface for commissioning and DustTool connection
  • Sintrol network protocol for multi-instrument monitoring

In addition, the on-board four-digit display and three-colour status LEDs (green, orange, red) provide clear local indication of dust levels for anyone on the factory floor.

Typical Applications

Across Australia, New Zealand, and internationally, the Sintrol DumoPro is widely deployed for workplace dust monitoring, dust explosion risk mitigation, and ambient air quality control in:

  • Flour, grain, and sugar mills
  • Mining and minerals processing
  • Timber, wood pellet, and biomass facilities
  • Cement and lime production
