Technical Description – OxyTrans M

OXYTRANS M Portable Oxygen Meter & Data Logger

The Centec OXYTRANS M is a portable optical oxygen meter and data logger engineered for high-precision measurement of dissolved O₂ in liquids and gases. Designed for applications demanding maximum sensitivity and accuracy, the OXYTRANS M delivers ppb-level performance for breweries, beverage producers, food and pharmaceutical manufacturers, power plants, and process industries across Australia and New Zealand.

Built around advanced optical luminescence technology, the OXYTRANS M eliminates the electrolytes, membranes, and frequent recalibration associated with traditional electrochemical oxygen sensors, delivering long-term stability with minimal maintenance.

Advanced Optical Oxygen Measurement Technology

The OXYTRANS M uses a proven optical measurement principle based on the radiationless redistribution of excitation energy through molecular interaction (quenched optical luminescence). Inside the measuring head, a small glass optical window is coated with a thin layer of indicator molecules. These molecules are illuminated by a blue-green LED inside the sensor, which excites them to a higher energy state. As the molecules return to their ground state, they emit red light, which is detected by an internal receiver.

When oxygen molecules are present, energy is transferred from the excited indicator molecules to the oxygen, reducing the detected red light signal. The decrease in luminescence is linear to the oxygen concentration, providing the basis for highly accurate O₂ measurement. Other gases do not absorb this energy and have no impact on the measurement, ensuring selective and reliable readings even in mixed gas environments.

Key Benefits of the OXYTRANS M

  • Optical sensor technology – no electrolyte or membrane changes required
  • Excellent long-term stability with minimal recalibration
  • Fast response time (t90 ≤ 10 seconds)
  • Ppb-level accuracy in liquids; ±0.002 % O₂ accuracy in gases
  • Selective to oxygen – other gases do not affect the reading
  • Internal data logging for up to 5,000 measurements
  • USB interface with PC software for data download and analysis
  • Manual or automatic logging with selectable intervals from 5 to 600 seconds
  • Rugged IP65 aluminium housing for industrial and laboratory use
  • Lightweight at just 1.65 kg for true portability
  • Rechargeable internal battery for cable-free operation
  • FDA-conforming wetted materials suitable for food and beverage applications

Applications

The OXYTRANS M is ideally suited to applications requiring portable, high-accuracy oxygen measurement, including:

  • Brewery oxygen monitoring (wort, beer, deaerated water, packaging)
  • Beverage production (soft drinks, juices, RTD products)
  • Liquid food processing and dairy
  • CO₂ and protective gas quality checks
  • Pharmaceutical and bioreactor monitoring
  • Power plant deaerated water testing
  • Process maintenance, diagnostics, and troubleshooting
  • Laboratory and quality control testing

Optical vs Electrochemical – Why Optical Wins

Unlike traditional electrochemical (Clark cell) oxygen sensors, the OXYTRANS M does not consume the gas it measures, does not require electrolyte solutions, and does not need regular membrane replacement. This translates to:

  • Significantly lower total cost of ownership
  • No drift between calibrations
  • Faster response and recovery times
  • Reliable performance in low-oxygen environments (down to 1 ppb)
  • Stable readings regardless of flow rate or sample agitation

Data Logging and PC Connectivity

The OXYTRANS M includes built-in data logging functionality for capturing measurement trends over time. Key data logging features include:

  • Capacity for approximately 5,000 measurement values
  • Selectable automatic logging intervals from 5 to 600 seconds
  • Manual logging on demand
  • USB interface for direct PC connection
  • Included PC software for data download, visualisation, and reporting

This makes the OXYTRANS M particularly valuable for maintenance audits, batch quality verification, and troubleshooting intermittent oxygen ingress issues.

Rugged, Hygienic Construction

The OXYTRANS M is housed in a sturdy aluminium enclosure rated to IP65, providing dust-tight and water-jet protection for use in demanding production environments. All wetted materials – 1.4404 / AISI 316L stainless steel, silicone (FDA), and PTFE (FDA) – conform to FDA requirements for food and beverage contact, making the instrument suitable for hygienic process applications.
