Technical Description – PlanerGuard
The Planer/Moulder is the heart of the production
- Long delivery time
- Costly loss of production (note. 40% due to fires)
Risk areas
- Friction at the lower feeding roller
- Bearings
- Cutters
- Engines
- Foreign objects
FIREFLY PLANERGUARD™ – FIRE PROTECTION OF HIGH-SPEED PLANER
Planing at high speeds leads to an increase in friction heat, making the process vulnerable to fire. Firefly’s Quick Suppression System PlanerGuard™ solution for high speed planers focuses on detecting ignition sources at an early stage. Non-invasive water mist suppression is used to suppress the fire quickly and effectively with the aim to avoid costly downtime and damage to the planer.
FIREFLY PLANERGUARD™ – FIRE PROTECTION OF OPEN PLANER
In many cases, large amounts of shavings are accumulated in and around the open planer. When ignited, these shavings can cause rapid fires resulting in considerable damage. Firefly’s PlanerGuard™ solution for open planers monitors the machine by using flame detectors installed local to the area. Non-invasive water mist suppression aims at quick and effective suppression of the fire, even in the closed areas of an open planer.
FIREFLY PLANERGUARD™ – FIRE PROTECTION OF MOULDER
A moulder is often installed in a production area adjacent to other machinery. The consequences of a fire in a moulder can therefore be extensive and cause damage to surrounding equipment. Firefly’s PlanerGuard™ solution for moulders detects sparks or incipient fire at a very early stage. Non-invasive water mist suppression aims at quick and effective suppression of the fire, even in the closed areas of a moulder.
A Closer Look
Reliable detection
- Only detect relevant ignition sources
- NOT sensitive to daylight
Fast detection
- Reaction time within milliseconds
Wide range of detectors
- Due to the design of the Planer – different types of detectors are used
Efficient Extinguishing
- No flooding of the Planer
- Minimal usage of water (1/10 compared with conventional sprinkler)
- Harmless to sensitive areas of the Planer
- Suitable for complex constructions
- Vaporises quickly into steam when in contact with flames and hot surfaces
- Continuous supply of water (not a one-shot system)
The facts about water mist – By Factory Mutual Research
- Cools the Fire area and blocking the heat radiation Cooling is accomplished due to the greater surface area presented by the quasi-gas created by water mist systems, and the blocking of radiant by the many microscopic droplets.
- Displacing the oxygen
The atomized droplets are drawn to the base of the fire and flash instantaneously to steam, expanding in volume by 1700 times, thereby displacing oxygen required for combustion.
