Safe Loading & Unloading in Hazardous Areas

The Stuvex TES01-V2 is a SIL 2 rated truck earthing verification system designed to prevent electrostatic ignition hazards during the loading and unloading of non-conductive liquids and powders in industrial environments. By continuously monitoring the earth clamp connection and verifying truck presence through capacitive measurement, the TES01-V2 ensures safe electrostatic discharge before loading or unloading is permitted. A potential-free interlock contact provides automatic release of loading equipment, with red and green status indicators for clear operator feedback.

Available in two variants – the TES01-V2/EX for gas atmospheres (zones 1, 2, 21, 22) and TES01-V2/IP for dust atmospheres (zones 21, 22) – the system is IECEx certified and complies with IEC 60079-31-1 and NFPA 77.

S604 and S804 Static Discharge Systems

An electrostatic charge can be generated while handling conductive liquids or powders.  A resistive system (S604) recognises the low conductive resistance of the object and of fixed installations. It is meant for general use with barrels, carts, metal objects. Uncontrolled electrostatic discharge when filling or unloading big bags is a frequent source of ignition. The earthing Control System (S804) recognises the conductivity of an FIBC (Big Bag) type C.

Australian Standards & Compliance

AS/NZS 1020:2023 — The Control of Undesired Static Electricity The primary Australian and New Zealand standard for managing static electricity risks. It sets out methodology for risk assessment, determination of appropriate control measures, and implementation and maintenance of those controls — including earthing and bonding requirements. It requires facilities to develop Static Electricity Assessment Reports and Static Electricity Control Plans. Note that AS/NZS 1020 covers non-hazardous area static control; for areas classified as having explosive atmospheres, the additional technical specification below applies.

SA TS 60079.32.1:2022 — Explosive Atmospheres: Electrostatic Hazards Guidance The Australian adoption of IEC TS 60079-32-1, this technical specification is the principal guidance document for electrostatic hazard control in areas classified as explosive atmospheres (Zones 1, 2, 21, and 22). It addresses static electricity in liquids, powders, gases, and vapours; earthing and bonding of plant and equipment; and personnel grounding requirements. The specification states that for all-metal earthing circuits, resistance to earth should not exceed 10 ohms — a higher reading indicates loose, corroded, or broken connections. The Stuvex TES01-V2 continuously monitors connection resistance to verify this threshold is maintained throughout every transfer operation.

AS/NZS 4979 — Flammable and Combustible Liquids: Precautions Against Electrostatic Ignition During Tank Vehicle Loading Directly applicable to tanker truck loading and unloading operations, this standard specifically addresses the electrostatic ignition risks that occur when flammable or combustible liquids are transferred to or from road tankers. It underpins the requirement for verified, interlocked earthing systems — exactly what the Stuvex TES01-V2 provides — rather than passive clamp-and-cable arrangements that offer no confirmation of a genuine earth connection.

AS/NZS 60079.10 — Classification of Hazardous Areas Establishes the zone classification methodology (Zone 0, 1, 2 for gases/vapours; Zone 20, 21, 22 for dusts) that determines where earthing systems must meet Ex-rated equipment requirements. Bonding connects two conductive objects to equalise their potential. Grounding connects them to earth. Both are required during tanker loading operations.

Why isn't a simple clamp and cable sufficient for tanker truck earthing?

clamp offers no verification. The TES01-V2 confirms resistance is low and the connected object is genuinely a road tanker — not structural steel.

What resistance to earth is required in a hazardous area?
