SpyGlass Open Path Combustible Gas Detector

SpyGlass Open Path Combustible Gas Detector

The Spyglass system detects hydrocarbon gases by analysing the absorption of radiation caused by gases in the atmosphere and comparing it to background atmospheric absorption. This is accomplished between a pair of units: a Flash Source and a Detector that can monitor a distance of up to 200 metres.

Spyglass Gas Detectors are robustly designed and can handle the toughest environments: 316L stainless steel housings that meet IP66/IP68 and NEMA 250 6P egress standards; circuit boards epoxy coated for protection; MIL-C-810C testing for humidity, salt, fog, vibration, mechanical shock and temperature extremes; and SIL-2 approval per IEC61508 is a final statement in reliability.

GD10P | Point Infrared (IR) Gas Detector

GD10P | Point Infrared (IR) Gas Detector

The Simtronics GD10P detector is the benchmark for combustible gas detection for offshore oil and gas installations. It has set the standard for gas detectors in the areas of safety, stability and low maintenance both onshore & offshore.

The GD10P has been designed with features that provide an effective response to the detection of gas hazards in a wide range of industrial environments from boiler plant rooms to offshore petrochemical installations.

These IR gas detectors differ from all other models, because they utilise silicon based solid-state IR sources. The complete opto-mechanical design and construction is so stable that an ultra-fast speed of response can be achieved whilst providing unparalleled service life and detector stability, thus saving on maintenance and service costs.

We offer the longest combined detector and IR source warranty on the market.

For retrofit applications, a bridge interface is available allowing the detector to be connected directly to catalytic systems, using cabling and control modules.

What is Methane Gas Detection?

Methane gas detection involves continuous or periodic monitoring of methane concentrations in the air to detect leaks before they escalate into safety incidents, explosions, or environmental breaches.

Methane is colourless, odourless, and lighter than air. While odorants are added for domestic applications, industrial methane leaks often occur in environments where smell is unreliable or masked by other process gases. This makes engineered methane gas detection essential.

A methane leak detection system typically consists of fixed or portable sensors, control panels, alarms, and integration with safety or shutdown systems. These systems measure methane concentration as a percentage of the Lower Explosive Limit (LEL), providing early warning well before conditions become hazardous.

While methane is lighter than air, other hydrocarbons, such as LPG, require different sensor placement and technologies, which is why methane systems are often specified separately from an LPG gas detector.

How Do You Detect Methane Gas?

The most common methane detection methods include:

Infrared (IR) absorption

Measures methane by detecting how it absorbs infrared light at specific wavelengths. Ideal for long-term stability and harsh environments.

Catalytic bead (pellistor) sensors

Detect methane through combustion on a heated sensor element, suitable for general LEL detection.

Laser-based and open-path technologies

  • Used for perimeter monitoring and large open areas where point sensors may be insufficient.

A properly designed methane leak detection system uses sensor technology matched to the application, environmental conditions, and safety objectives. ProDetec engineers assess airflow patterns, gas behaviour, ignition sources, and site layout to ensure methane sensors are positioned for effective early detection.

These systems often integrate with gas detection monitors, alarms, ventilation systems, and emergency shutdown (ESD) logic to minimise risk and response time.

Where Should Methane Sensors Be Placed?

Correct methane sensor placement is critical to the effectiveness of any methane gas leak detection system.

Because methane is lighter than air, sensors are typically installed:

  • Near ceilings or roof spaces
  • Above potential leak sources such as valves, flanges, compressors, and pressure regulators
  • In enclosed or poorly ventilated areas where gas accumulation may occur
  • Along gas transmission routes and process equipment

Sensor placement must consider airflow, ventilation systems, temperature gradients, and structural obstructions. ProDetec provides site-specific design support to ensure methane sensors detect leaks quickly and reliably, rather than after gas has dispersed.

For larger or open areas, solutions such as infrared hydrocarbon gas detector technologies may be used to effectively monitor wide zones or perimeters.

Australian Compliance & Safety Standards

Methane gas leak detection systems in Australia must comply with a range of safety, electrical, and hazardous-area standards, depending on the application.

Key considerations include:

  • Hazardous area classification and equipment suitability
  • Electrical safety and intrinsic safety requirements
  • Functional safety performance for critical detection points
  • Environmental compliance related to methane emissions reduction

ProDetec supplies methane gas detectors and systems that meet relevant Australian and international standards, including IECEx and ATEX certification where required. Our solutions support compliance obligations while also aligning with industry best practices for safety and reliability.

Ongoing performance is equally important. Regular gas monitor calibration ensures methane sensors remain accurate and compliant over their service life, particularly in regulated environments.

Methane Detection Systems for Australian Industries

Methane gas leak detection plays a vital role across multiple Australian industries where methane is produced, transported, stored, or released as a by-product.

null

Oil & Gas Production and Transmission

Methane is the primary component of natural gas, making continuous methane leak detection essential at wellheads, compressor stations, metering facilities, valve sites, and pipeline infrastructure. Fixed methane sensors provide early warning of leaks that could otherwise lead to catastrophic incidents or regulatory breaches.

In facilities handling multiple fuel gases or hydrogen blends, methane detection is often deployed alongside complementary technologies such as a hydrogen gas detector to ensure full coverage across evolving gas compositions.

null

Mining and Resources

Underground coal mining environments require reliable methane leak detection to manage explosion risk and ensure worker safety. ProDetec supplies methane detection systems designed for hazardous areas with certified explosion-proof construction.

null

Industrial Manufacturing

Facilities that use methane as a fuel source or produce it as a by-product rely on methane leak detection systems to protect personnel, assets, and production continuity.

null
